The 5D can autofocus with lenses which have a maximum aperture of f5.6 or larger. The 1D and 1Ds families can autofocus with lenses which have a maximum aperture of f8 or larger (eg: f6.3).
You may not have any lenses with a maximum aperture of f8, but if you put a 2x teleconverter onto an f4 lens you have a combination with a maximum aperture of f8.
