I always thought it was, ultimately, that the number of pixels in any digital sensor is smaller than the size of the light-sensitive crystals/complexes that form the color-developing center of a piece of film, coupled to the finite number of color gradiations available in a digital sensor versus the essentially continuous gradiations available in the analog media of film.
Or magic. Yeah, that works, too.
