I NEVER use a tripod in my studio, including when I drag the shutter (FYI - dragging the shutter means shooting at a shutter speed that is less than the highest sync speed of your camera). I find that I can drag the shutter as low as 1/30 sec with my VR lenses and everything looks great. That said, I do use a tripod about 50% of the time when shooting outside at sunset.

Here's an example of dragging the shutter -- Shot below was taken at 1/30 sec with a 50mm lens set to f2.2 (non VR lens) ... and one Alient Bee 400.
