Often the slowness for preview of images is not the camera's fault, but rather a slow CF card. I know on my 20D if I put in a slow CF card from several years ago it can take 3 or 4 seconds or longer to display a preview as opposed to less than 1 second with the latest crop of CF cards. Surprisingly, my oldest card, a IBM 1gb Microdrive (5 or 6 years old) still rivals the 80x and faster cards that are now coming out.
