Zak,
Here is a link to an article in Rangefinder Magazine, which explains some basic lighting techniques. However, keep in mind that this is written for "portrait" photography, and will probably vary depending on what, who and how the image is used.

Nowadays, there are so many modified lighting patterns that are seen, and many of them are by very successful photographers. I still use these "tried and true" setups for some of my photography, and even though I have been a professional photographer for 37 years, I am changing my thoughts about what lighting is all about.

For glamour it might be the very high contrast, Hurrell style (not that I have achieved that degree of success with my lighting), or some other style.

Fashion has few rules it seems, and I am all for breaking rules (finally).
But the basic are always a place to start, and for general portraiture will always be "saleable".

One last comment(s).. Take this lovely girl and photograph her again without the kicker, or at least reduce the intensity, and control the amount with barn doors or a snoot. I think you are on the right track with the other lighting.. just modify it a little.

To me., the second one (last one on the original post) has a lot going for it, just watch the hot kicker. If you notice, you have almost achieved a "Rembrandt" lighting pattern on both of them (the triangle on the cheek is the key)
