Compatability will not really be a problem until Canon updates it's bodies. Then all bets may be off. This is a common problem with aftermarket lens on either Canon or Nikon bodies. For example what I call first generation AF lens from Tamron would work fine on a Nikon F90 but wouldn't work on the Nikon F80 or any of the newer digital bodies. The chip in the lens was the problem. Yes they could be sent back and re-chipped. ( at the time).
So for what its worth, buy what you're going to use today and not worry about the future. There is usually a reason, maybe more than one, why a lens is cheaper.
