Use quick mask, those are the 2 buttons of the bottom of your tool pallete just below the color picker. It does what Dave was talking about but with fewer steps. Unless you change the default setting you will have to invert the selection and that will get you going. Learning to get a seamless composite takes practice, there are lots of ways to do it but using layers is the easiest.
