I think part of what you are seeing is information on older Sigma lenses. Some of them had a problem "talking to" the newer Canon bodies and they had to replace the chip in the lens. The newer lensed don't have that problem.
I have a Sigma 70-300mm that does a good job and is pretty darn sharp. I use it alot for close range hummingbird shots. I have a Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 that I really like for studio work. Both have been used on a 10D and a 20D.
