If you shoot jpeg, make sure to set your white balance. I don't like the auto balance for portraits/fashion work. Personally I shoot only raw and balance in post. I've gotten my ACR parameters down so I can produce what I want in skin tones. Also check the sharpening and saturation settings. I like to use +1 on sharpening and 0 on saturation. The auto settings aren't sharp enough and provide too much saturation IMHO.
The nifty fifty is a great lens in f/1.8 but my workhorse is the 28-70mm f/2.8 AF-S. It's a beast, but really shines between 35 & 70mm. It's no slouch below there, but I don't like the WA distortion.
