charmane is an experienced model and certainly knows how to "sell it" and, like that Madonna song says, "strike a pose." she's one of those models who moves slowly into a pose, eyes averted, and kind of gets into a "zone" before making eye contact. generally, with models like this, i'll wait till they lift their eyes to the camera and then i shutter the image. in fact, i often encourage less experienced models to look at things away from the camera and then, when i like what i see with everything else, i'll say things like, "okay, now just give me your eyes." in this shot i purposely snapped it before she did so, liking what i was seeing in the viewfinder.
i am quite vocal directing models. when i suggest certain poses, a lot of my direction then has to do with things like the tilt of their heads (up and down) or moving their heads side-to-side plus small adjustments to leg and arm positions. i often encourage models to do things like kick their hips or butts further out or other adjustments to maximize the "s" curve of their bodies or whatever lines i want see their bodies make. also, since the models can't see how the light is striking them, i pay special attention to how the modeling lights are playing on their faces and bodies and call out small adjustments for them to make to move them into and out of the light to make use of shadows and highlights. yeah, i'm quite vocal and active directing models. i also mouth a pretty steady stream of positive reinforcements and even though these words sound rote and repetitive like they're pre-recorded, it seems to help. i usually keep the music playing fairly loudly.
