I can't comment on the colour/tone issue but anything I've been told or have read rates the D2x as having the highest resolution of the two cameras.
I know some pro's who use the D2x, and they regularly blow up prints to the 30" + size and still find the image to be extremely sharp. I've found as a general rule that the Nikon digitals tend to produce a fairly neutral image which allows you much more lattitude at the processing stage.
It's my view that there is " no perfect camera out there ". I think you can give two photographers the exact same gear and one of them will produce better results than the other. As I've said before in other posts, photography is not an equipment game.
