A neutral color for the walls is better than white. Black can be a bit depressing, but a shade of gray can work nicely. If the color is neutral such as a gray, then it will reflect no color cast into the scene. Black gives the most control because it absorbs over 90% of the light. White gives the least control because it reflects about 90% of the light.
