The K1000 is a good basic camera but unless you know what to look for you can end up buying a mess.
You might want to consider one of the newer film cameras with both AF/M as well as having full Manual, Aperture, Shutter & Program operating modes. Although you'll be mostly using the Manual controls during the course, after it's over the other modes particularly Aperture are very useful. These cameras all have built in flash and power winders ( advances the film after each shot.)
Something like one of the Canon EOS Rebels, there are many different models or a Nikon N65,N70,N75. They usually come with a normal zoom covering the 28 to 80/90 range that will work fine for your course. These types of cameras are plentiful and relatively cheap on the used market.
I've found that you can buy a newer film camera for the same price as a K1000 on the used market.
