I'm looking into a few myself as far as books, but as for lighting, I would check around on some used stuff from reputable photographers or see where they purchase their stuff from.
I bought a used 4 light novatron system for $550 and the photog through in a few extras. Like 1000w bare bulb, some umbrellas, gels and such. He had switched to another light system and had these in storage. I got lucky, but well worth the time doing some hunting for them.
