I shoot a D70 and can honestly say that to get the best out of this body, you really need to hang good glass in front of the sensor. I've shot with all of the following with noted results:
These are all Nikkor lenses:
50mm f/1.8D - not bad for a $99 prime, limited compression capability
18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED AFS - the 'kit' lens. It's OK but I found it soft where I needed it most between 50 & 70mm
24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED AFS - better than the kit lens between 50-70mm plus the extra 15mm gives better compression
80-200mm f/2.8D ED AFS - first 'pro' glass. Super lens, but it's a tank
70-200mm f/2.8G VR ED AFS - traded up from the 80-200mm. Finest glass I own
28-70mm f/2.8D ED AFS - another superb lens I use 60% of the time. Paired with the 70-200mm, it's really all I need.
