I've never heard of the Tristar units.
You might look at the MicroSynch Digital radio units though, I rented a set and loved them. They're right around $300 for a tx/rx set, and they're SMALL which is what the draw is for me (I like the Pocket Wizards, but shooting with both eyes open, I find the transmitter to be in the way and annoying).
As for buzzing out your camera, I would think that your hot shoe adapter would have that protection built in...Better check on that for sure though, I don't know the Canon stuff all that well.
