I just created an Action in PS7 and converted about 50 jpgs to tif in 30 seconds. Be sure to check the "Supress all color profile warnings" box. Works a charm.
As for those who would advise you against such endeavors, they think all cameras create RAW files, and jpgs are junk, etc. Ignore such silliness. Do what works for you. I've been doing exactly what you mention for years, it's the only reliable way to shoot in jpg and edit and save your progress without further degrading the file beyond acceptable limits. There are times when RAW is best, and there are times when jpg is best. I can't count how many top shooters I know on this board who rarely shoot RAW files, yet still edit their images. And I know they convert to TIF first.
