One thing to consider is that the softfocus lenses were made at that time to provide you with a softened look that can now be done with a tacksharp image and a computer. It's easier to soften something down than to sharpen something up.
I've often thought of getting a soft focus lens but the prices are still too high and it is a single purpose lens.
