Depends where you are shooting, what the lighting conditions are etc. etc. That is why those settings do not work a lot of the time. I suggest purchasing an ExpoDisc and doing a Custom White balance.
However, with that said, if I'm shooting outdoors in good light, I can leave it on automatic white balance and it does just fine. In the studio, I know the Kelvin temp of my lights, so I set it to that on the Kelvin setting on the 20D.
For indoors without a strobe, you must custom white balance. Same for outdoors in shade. Those are my experiences with the 20D
