I'd spend the bulk of money on lights. You'll see more of a difference in light quality, recycle times, consistent color and so on between the AB's and say a broncolor or hensel than between an assortment of bodies. Although the higher priced cameras have better, larger sensors, how good do they have to be to get published? I have no problems getting published with my 10D at 6 mp. The glass is where it's at.
Also think about the use of the camera. For example, I thought about replacing my 10D with the D20 and I'm glad I didn't. I have a friend who shoots for ESPN and says that the 20D's short out in light rain while the 10D's keep on going. I've shot mine in light rain with no problems and since I do a lot of location shooting, that's nice to know.
