Vincent brings up a great point that I don't see discussed much when talking about the merits of the S2 vs the D1x. There's ONE thing that really makes the difference. The S2 is built on a prosumer body -- the N80. The D1x is built on the F5 body. The F5 is a tank. It can really take the abuse and shoot thousands of images. The S2 (and my S1) have never let me down -- but I don't put them to REAL hard use and I only shoot 10 - 15 thousand images a year.
I don't know if the level of use / abuse makes a difference for you.
