Hello David,
I’ve been using the D1x for the past year and a half and have been more then pleased with the results. My Bronica now collects dust because the image quality I get is just as good. I can print 20x30 with no image loss at all and 30x40 are not that much of a challenge as well. Of course the lab may need to tweak the image a bit in using "Genuine Fractals" but that is minimal. The Raw format is useless unless maybe your printing for billboards ;o) otherwise you will never tell the difference and is a waste of card space. As Bob mentioned is his reply, all are correct.
Both cameras are great. The Canon D1 is dated just like the Nikon D1x and I‘m sure should be totally replaced here in the next few months. I believe D1 is still in production because the 1Ds, like mentioned, is around 7-8k a pretty price to pay for a 12 Meg pix camera.
Many Master photographers (some I know and some I’ve heard) are using the D1x and Fuji S2 for their weddings and portraits and no longer using their medium formats; point being is that whatever you get is going to be nice and you will be happy. Of my choice, the D1x of course, but I’ve heard and seen great things about the Fuji S2 in that the color is nicer and the images sharper, I’d need to shoot it and compare but I think I’d be pulling hairs at that point. I don’t think there is a “perfect camera”... yet.
O and one important point, if you already have several Canon lenses and flashes then your choice is easy. Unless you have tons of money to replace everything you already have, if you have Canon then use Canon. Hope this helps.
