A couple of observations.
First, shooting in TIFF is a feature that no one I know uses. Either you shoot JPEG to give you more images on a card or you shoot RAW because size matters and you want the image straight from the camera.
Second, no image that anyone can post would look any different. No one could post a 20 or 30 MB RAW file. You can't tell the difference on a forum post between formats.
Are you comparing the D1x to the Canon 1D or 1Ds. I thought they''d stopped making the 1D... The 1Ds is something like $7K or $8K and the D1x is aorund $4K - $5K.
