After you select your images and you have them displayed on the background canvas, if you right click on an image you want for the background, one of your choices will be "Set as Canvas background". Choose that.

To get the torn look, I do a Selection | Select All, then Tools | Frame | Frame Type | Image Frame and then follow the steps shown on this screen shot:



The red arrow labeled 1 shows selecting the Red frame icon with the white mouse cursor. When you click on that the dialog shown in Step 2 pops up and you choose from the dialog I'm pointing to in step 2 to choose one of the Jagged edge masks. If you choose a black mask, then the image will show through the black part of the mask. If you choose a white mask, and then select hole check box, then the image will show through the white part of the mask. In my screen shot you wouldn't want the hole checked (it would be unchecked).
Play around with the interface as there is a ton of stuff you can do.
