As has been said, if you are looking at monolights (which you are) you need to be looking at the individual power of each unit. I don't think that you need to be ALWAYS above 500w/s with each unit, but a 20w/s unit is not going to do you much good. There is also a little grey area between TRUE Watt Seconds and EFFECTIVE Watt Seconds.
I started with an Ebay kit that had 3 130w/s monolight strobes. It was good to learn on, but now I want more power. I just ordered an Alien Bee B800. It is a 800w/s (effective) monolight.
