I've used the 1 ring version of the 80-200 on the D100 at weddings and for indoor sports. I don't think you can go wrong buying this lens.
It's heavy but very well balanced so it doesn't feel as heavy as it is. At weddings we typically will use it for shooting from the balcony on a tripod. For indoor sports I use it handheld.
I haven't had any problems with the autofocus but how it works for you will be determined by your needs.
