Generally only higher-end strobe lines have such goodies as beauty-dishes and ring flashes, but of course maybe somebody here knows if one can be adapted, modified, etc without a whole machine shop.
However, it should be noted that an umbrella is much the same thing. Not as light efficient, and without the feeling of "intensity" in the light, and not as perfectly smooth and even because an umbrella is always going to be hotter in the center. However, as a poor man's fix it does fulfill the same purpose. A beauty dish is really little more than a very expensive, high intensity, highly efficient and smooth, even umbrella.
Just as a shoot-through white umbrella is a poor-man's soft box.
Even though I have (and love) ring flashes and beauty dishes, there are shoots on location where all the heavy gear just isn't practical, and I'll break out the umbrellas and simulate a Chimera or a beauty dish and while the effect isn't quite the same it is similar.
As always, it's always the photography (the vision and the idea as well as the technique) that makes the photograph more than the gear.
