I'm with Don on this, best way to select edges there is. It takes a lot of practice to be efficient and it can be kind of frustrating while you learn but once you've got it, you will have one of Photoshop's best tools in your pocket.
Play with it. Zoom way in. Use the space bar (hand tool) to move the image as you work.
Ctrl-click the work path in the Paths palette to make it a selection.
Try clicking and dragging and, while you're still moving the handle, press and hold the Alt key to fix the trailing handle while still moving the leading handle.
If you go back and move handles on other points you can go back to drawing your path by clicking on the endpoint; you'll know it's right on the endpoint when the cursor shows a little circle with a slash through it beside the arrow.
If you drop your path you can reselect it by holding the Ctrl key down and click-dragging over it.
I usually have my left ring finger on the control key to change to the selection arrow and my left index finger on the Alt key to work with the control points (handles). I also keep my left thumb on the space bar to activate the hand tool so I can easily move around the image.
In the image below everything except the hair was selected with the path tool and colorized, took about an hour.
