Personally, I would not consider a 17-35mm lens for that sort of gig. Even with the built in lens factor of digital, you're likely to end up with with lots of big elbows and such, along with having to block the view of the audience to shoot the performance. I would be more inclined to look for a fixed 85/f1.8 lens. That will give a bit of distance and a more 'normal' perspective.
Since the available lighting is unknown, you might also consider a bracket mounted flash, to get the flash away from the lens, with a small 'softbox' or reflector device to soften the flash.
