Hotlights with softboxes sounds like a recipe for a fire.
But I'll admit I have no experience with hotlights because they are such a fire-hazard and they're not daylight balanced, although my nephew has gotten pretty good results with 3 500 watt lights, but he doesn't use a lot of modifiers. I have 4 670 watt-second monolights which I find to be a good, versatile setup.
